First entry!

Welcome to my website. I guess the correct way to kickstart this blog is with a short bio. What a bummer. Here goes:

My name is Gunnar Ohberg, and I'm a writer based in Georgia. I've been lucky enough to have a few of my short stories and poems published in various magazines, a handful of which I intend to share on this site as I continue to develop it. I received a Bachelor's in English from Ole Miss and a Master's in Creative Writing from the University of Saskatoon. I tend to write about broken men in fantasy, horror, western, and grit-lit settings, with a few sci-fi and lit-fic stories sprinkled in. I'm currently editing a manuscript of mine, a satirical adventure novel called Belly, Doc, KUDZU. I'm also shopping around a short story I wrote titled "The Wyrm Fighter." I'm about three-fourths through a fantasy western novel that I think I'm going to name Good Tawlin. Recently, I was the Fiction Editor of a literary magazine called BTWN. I have also independently edited a novel, a memoir, and various short fiction.

I enjoy reading just about any genre of fiction. My favorite authors include Toni Morrison, William Faulkner, Cormac McCarthy, Glen Cook, George R.R. Martin, Percival Everett, Kurt Vonnegut, Lydia Davis, Gillian Flynn, Larry McMurtry, Hunter S. Thompson, and Alex Grecian. My favorite novels include The Little Prince, Blood Meridian, Slaughter-house Five, Big Sur, Red Rabbit, Yellowface, Gone Girl, Lincoln in the Bardo, and Erasure. Preacher by Garth Ennis and Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo aren't novels, but they are two of the greatest stories ever written. Outside of words, I'm a big fan of 90's punk and alternative, video games, and Atlanta sports, the last of which will probably have me committed one day.

"Short bio." Well, I tried. At least that's out of the way now.

But Gunnar! Why would you start a blog if you don't like writing about yourself and you're clearly not very good at it?

Thanks for asking, Rhetorical Device. What I hope to do is present a very honest and transparent record of my adventures in becoming a published novelist. Not just the goods but the bads as well, of which I'm sure there will be plenty. The rejections, the setbacks, the self-doubt, the weeks when I tell myself I should have been a lawyer. They will be included in here along with whatever good may come.

I'd also like to invite anyone with any questions on writing or editing to reach out to me so that I may answer them here. I intend to be very candid and straightforward in this blog. An open book, if you will (couldn't resist, I'm not sorry).

Not sure yet how often I'll be posting on here, but once a week minimum is the goal. And writers are famously terrific with self-imposed deadlines. So if any of this garble piqued your interest, I hope you'll come back soon.

Entry #7, Certain Sharks

At first, this entry was going to be a sort of confessional on how I'd wasted another week avoiding the "professional" part of "professional writer." That was my intention a few days ago, anyway. Then

Entry #5, Productive Procrastination

Bit of a roller coaster this past week, if I'm being honest. Not for the first time, I find myself enjoying a few breakthroughs and opportunities while also struggling to complete any of my projects o
